The women-in-prison flick CAGED! was based on notes and observations made by writer Virginia Kellogg who spent time undercover in the US prison system. But these seemingly fragile people are the strong people really. But during the pre period, in movies made in America, there was never any hint of homosexuality in movies about men in prison. At the beginning of the movie, we see him treating a young man who has contracted syphilis. Julian, a shy art student, nervously reached for the same worn copy of Maurice as Leo, a confident activist known throughout the local LGBT center; their fingers brushed, a spark igniting that transcended their different worlds. Leo's easy smile melted Julian's anxieties, revealing a shared love for stories of gay men finding their place, whispering possibilities neither had dared to imagine before. They talked for hours amidst the quiet shelves, discovering a deep connection that bloomed despite their contrasting backgrounds, realizing that love knew no socioeconomic boundaries.
